I may have mentioned that I live in housing for government employees. Great idea, but there are certainly drawbacks. Take this past week for example. On Thursday, Hubby got a confusing message at work, saying that the housing co-ordinator had called regarding the new cabinet arriving. Huh? New cabinet? Our entire kitchen was redone in August, just after we moved in. (Yup, AFTER we, with 2 small children, were told we could move in. For the first 2 weeks, we had no kitchen. But anyway.) We figured the message was just an error of some sort. Friday morning, I was getting out of the shower when I heard someone at the door. Lo and behold, two construction guys, wanting to bring in my new cabinet. I think they were a bit disconcerted to be greeted by a crazy lady wearing a flannel nightie and a towel on her head. I told them I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about, but they confirmed that it was indeed my lucky day, and I was getting a new cupboard. Turns out our one cupboard was a bit too large, and the ugly brown trim around the kitchen window had been removed in order to fit the cupboard in. So, rather than replace the trim, or cut it to fit, or (gasp!) order the correct size the first time around, the powers that be decided to rip out the old (5 months) cupboard and put in a new, smaller one that is almost the same color. They paid these guys for 2 hours of travel, plus the cost of the cupboards and installation. Not my money, so what do I care. My only concern was the mental scarring these poor gentleman suffered, from watching me tear around the kitchen in my flannel (with purple flowers all over it) nightie and head towel, with Boy Terror howling, and Girl Terror entertaining them with gems like "My library books! See? Here, sit here. Read books." or "See my room? Come see my room?" and my personal favorite, the singing of a Blue's Clues song "Riding my bike, to Magenta's house. Riding my bike, to Magenta's house." Meanwhile, I was trying to empty the offending cupboard without flashing everyone, and shoving dirty breakfast dishes around to make room for a toolbox and all the other things coming into my home.
Life is never dull around here. At least I met some new people! I doubt we will be bestest of friends, but you never know. Maybe they will come back to replace the window trim some other morning.
