Mummy Ears

Since having babies, I have developed a hearing problem. I have Mummy ears. When I am in the shower, I hear kids hollering. When I blow-dry my hair, I hear the phone ringing. If I step out of the room, I hear poking, pushing, and pinching. Wait, that one really does happen...
At a friend's house on Saturday night, I realized I am not alone with hearing things differently now. My friend had her baby in the crib upstairs. I had my two in a bedroom downstairs. All the grown-ups were sitting in the living room, playing poker. (Yes! Poker! An adult evening, with adults!) Remarkably, the other Mummy and I were the only ones who ever heard sounds from the bedrooms. Several times we leapt up, to see which child was stirring, while everyone else went "What? Where are you going? What's happening?" She and I were also the only ones to understand just how much noise shuffling a deck of cards can make, when a baby is on the edge of sleep in the next room.
Now, as I write this, I hear Girl Terror screaming at her brother to get OUT. OF. HER. ROOM!!! I know Hubby hears it, too, since he is upstairs with the kids, but I bet he doesn't hear what I do. I hear I child who needs to nap, 15 minutes ago. I hear a little girl who will, by the end of the day, have a cold courtesy of her snot-nosed brother. And I hear me, staggering around tonight, blowing noses and giving medicine at 3 AM. Sigh. I need better ear plugs.

Maybe you could get better ones just for tonight? Then the hubby will be forced to tune his hearing in a little better at 3:00 AM?

I know exactly what you are describing.

Listen, if you don't want those kids I bet you could sell 'em on eBay.

(Now then, has your state of mind improved? Heh.)

Along with those mummy ears are the mummy eyes. The ones in the back of your head.

I could sit and scream my husband's name 20 times right next to him and he won't hear me if he's on the phone or computer. Wish I could tune out like that once in a while!!

When you find those ear plugs, be sure to tell me where to get them... My baby boy has been on 'grandparents-camp' for a week and still I can sometimes here him coughing or talking in his bedroom.. funny isn't it, how your mind plays tricks on you...

But it's true.. mummy ears are something you get for free with a baby...
