First Day of School

Today the students came to school. I know it's only the first day, and I'm sure there will be rough days in the year ahead, but for today, I love teaching! It was fun! Invigorating! Challenging! Lots of other things ending with exclamation points!!
I teach English 9, English 10, and English 10 General. It's my favourite age group. So far, the kids in my classes seem fun. Lots of diversity, though. Things have changed since I was in high school. (Old. So old.) In those three classes, I have an out-of-the-closet gay guy, a "gender undecided" person, two kids who speak English only at school, and of course, a stoner. I'm not being mean. He sat up part way through the class, looked at me, and said "I am so stoned." I already knew that, but I was still a bit surprised to have him tell me! I said "Yes, I know. I've had to wake you up 4 times. Do NOT come to my class like this again."
I'm sure there are plenty of other interesting characters, but today I was just trying to put faces with names, and sort out the muddle of lockers, student handbooks, and confusing bell schedules.
It was fun. But now, I'm totally wiped out, and I need to go crash on the couch. One day done, 80-something to go.

In a previous life I taught English 9-10-11. (Also 7-8-12 and Advanced Placement/Dual Credit. I know. You can't tell by looking at me now.) LOVED everything about it - except dealing with parents. That part I do NOT miss. Oh, and crappy administration.

If you ever want to brainstorm teaching/lesson plan ideas, I'm game. I kept everything from my years as a teacher. I can't bring myself to give it away. Bonfire? Maybe. But I'd rather share.

Good on you for surviving the first day...but please tell me that was a typo: 80 days? Don't you mean One Hundred AND eighty days? :) (Sorry)

Glad to hear things began well. I am a division 1 teacher, but I am beginning to fall for teenagers. Having my own is definitely part of the reason. I guess you fear what you don't know....
Enjoy the English class. Daughter tells me her 10-IB class is already her favourite.

Sounds like an interesting first day. I find it a little scary to know the changes that have taken place since I was a kid. In some ways it is liberating, in some ways I am scared for my little girl when she gets there.
