Cake

I've been playing around with cake decorating....it's addictive and fun! These two little cakes were just for practice.

This is the very first cake I made. I love the roses and the marble effect. I am not as thrilled with Hubby's contribution.

They look pretty, but they taste horrid!

The cupcakes were a project the Terror's helped with. They got to choose what decorations would go on each cupcake. Then, of course, they helped eat them!

Back from the big city.

I'm back!!! Vancouver was lovely. Well, as lovely as rain can be. The MRI results will be in next week, but I'm sure it's all good.
I went shopping. So much shopping that my feet still hurt. I rode the sky train, the sea bus, and the city bus. Call me crazy, but I love public transportation. You don't have to worry about parking, and the stress of driving is not your problem. I am not shy, so I talk to all sorts of people while I watch the scenery. People in the big city of Vancouver are surprisingly friendly and helpful. Any time I asked directions, or for information, I was treated to smiles and helpful conversation.
The bed....oh, the bed. I slept like a baby in my delightful hotel room. I could really get used to having someone to clean up after me and make my bed every day!
It was so nice to breath damp air. My skin looked fantastic, my hair was soft, and my contacts never dried out. Mind you, my feet were wet the entire time I was there, and I went through two umbrellas, but seeing flowers and grass made it worth the cold toes.
Tomorrow is back to school. I feel rested and ready to face the busy semester. Now if only spring would show up....

This, that, and the other thing.

Few things irk me more than being forced to participate in public prayer, offered up by a First Nations elder, at every professional conference I go to.

***

Either I have started mumbling, or my entire family is going deaf.

***

Remember when I said I was loving Spring Break, and had no major plans? Change of plans. I'm going to Vancouver for an MRI next week.

***
Yes, I live in a town with no MRI machine, no neurologist, no psychiatrist, no orthodontist, and no you-name-it specialists.

***

I am done spring cleaning! Woo hoo!

***

My kids have the most beautiful laughter in the world.

***

Some men should NEVER be permitted to eat chili.

***

The sun is shining! Spring is coming! I will survive!

***
I am totally ashamed to admit, I spent close to an hour today browsing the stupid lol cat website. And yes, I even laughed aloud at a few of them.

***

I have done a nail treatment, a foot soak, shaved my legs, and done a chocolate mud facial mask. I'm feeling very girly.

***

I think I might be over-caffeinated. I have many, many words, but no paragraphs.

Spring Break

We are on Spring Break here in the Average household, and life is sweet. Yes, I love my job, and my students this semester are the best I've ever had, but....
Going into the break, my plans included nothing more taxing than moving from the bed to the couch. I felt mentally and physically wiped out, and I figured two weeks of being a slug would be all I could manage. But somehow, just knowing that I am on a break has been enough to revitalize me! So far, I have:
-Played a good game of poker. I didn't win much, but I didn't lose, either, so for me it was a good night.
-Done 3 loads of laundry.
-Taken Girl Terror to dance class.
-Discovered the hidden area of a local shop, filled with cake decorating paraphernalia.
-Baked a cake....from scratch!
-Decorated the cake with fondant...my first attempt.
-Changed half the clocks in the house for daylight savings.
-Hugged my babies.

I have no idea what the plan for today is, but I'm sure it will be relaxing and fun. Perhaps not as relaxing and fun as being in a warm, tropical place like many of my friends and colleagues, but still just what I need.

My little book worm.

I am a reader. I remember coming home from the first day of grade one, pissed right off because I had spent the entire day in school, and I still did not know how to read. When I was a kid, my mother would force me to put down my books and go outside. I read to escape. Books were my friends and confidantes. In college, I would often read right through the night.
Fortunately, I married another reader. Hubby reads more books than even I do. So I guess it's no surprise that for us, seeing our daughter read on her own is one of the best parts of parenting.
When Girl Terror was born, the hospital gave her a book. "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" is still on the shelf. We read to her right from birth. She is in grade one now, and is suddenly reading on her own. In the last few months she has discovered that she can read anything. She sounds out signs and store names. She reads to her brother. I often find her curled up on the couch, reading books about sharks, volcano's, and evolution.
I know what it is like to not have your love of books supported. I grew up in a home where any "difference" was suppressed. As a child who like to be alone with a book for hours on end, I was certainly different, so I had to change. My books were taken away, occasionally destroyed, and reading for pleasure was something I hid, like a guilty habit. I always vowed to never do the same to any child of mine.
I don't have the right words to express how thrilled and proud I am of this little girl. She is a sponge, and she seems to have an endless curiosity about the world around her. I hope she continues to love books, and learning. I even look forward to the day I find her with my book, losing my page, and wrecking the plot for me.
